The whale season on the East coast of South Africa is from June to November.
Humpback whales feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters in winter. During the months of June to November, a group of humpback whales are on their way to Mozambique and Madagascar to breed and this is when we can admire these majestic animals.
It is estimated that there are about 7 000 whales in this “group”.
Whale watching times
6:00 – 8:00am
8:00 – 10:00am
Although we mostly prefer to launch in the early mornings, we DO some days have a WHOLE day of awesome weather and calm seas.
On the day of your trip, the tour operator will collect you from your accommodation in St Lucia. We will make a stop at the tour operator’s office and transport whale watchers to the beach. On the beach, guests will transfer to the whale watching boat, have a short safety briefing, put on the necessary safety gear and launch to sea looking for whales.
Obviously some whale watching trips are better than others. There are breaches and splashes; and sometimes just pairs of whales swimming alongside the vessel. We cannot guarantee that whales will jump during a whale watching trip.
Put on some sunscreen to protect against the hot South African sun.
You will get wet. Dress accordingly and wear some comfortable clothes.
Bring a jacket. It can get cold on the ocean.
Take your camera or binoculars. There is always something amazing to see.
Children under 12 years of age, people with neck and back injuries, pregnant women and elderly people cannot go whale watching in St Lucia.
Whale watching is weather dependent. Please check the weather here.

We went on a whale watching trip in October. It was as amazing experience, launching from the beach. There were baby whales swimming with their mothers and a few times whales breached. Definitely recommend this activity.
